Things to Know About Continuous Insulation

Steel is a pretty good conductor of heat, its R-Value is really low, however it is known that traditionally the area of a wall or ceiling bridged by steel is so small that the overall loss of heat is relatively minor and recently, research has shown that this is false.  If bridging of steel in a wall is equal to less than one tenth or 1 percent of the total wall area, it will allow for heat to flow through small surfaces.  Here are 7 things that you need to know about continuous insulation.

There are several ways to break the bridge across a steel framing member. This can be done by insulated sheathing, designing and installing distance spacers (This will place an air barrier between the framing and the exterior sheathing), adding a reflective surface to the space and this way the air barrier has an increased R-Value and alternate framing members.  In order to ensure the best results, this requires the full involvement of the design team.  Insulation to extreme levels can be achieved with any building, however the return on investment can be reached relatively quickly.
The different types of foam insulation are: expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS) and polyisocyanurate (Polyiso).   The way EPS is manufactured is by expanding polystyrene beads to fill a form.  Depending on the density of the beads, vapor resistance, thermal resistance and structural strength can be varied.  The way XPS is created is by extruding a mixture called molten polysterene and then using a blowing agent through a die at high temperatures. You can find polyiso anywhere, it is commercially available and it is made up by polyurethane foam modified with polyisocaynurate.  This mix together, will increase the fire resistance while maintaining R-values and strength.

If you want to add space, consider a thermal block on the framing member before installing panels. This will allow the wall to retain its full rating and prevent the short cut caused by fasteners.
The varieties in facings come with different advantages. One example is the foil facing which helps reduce heat conductivity. Another example is kraft paper facing which is commonly used for batt insulation and works well for increasing the permeability rating on vapor infiltration.  Facing is so important and it does more than just moisture control and heat conductivity.  In sports-type buildings, often constructed using metal building systems, a fiberglass and polyester blend facing will prevent the insulation from being punctured by sharp and blunt objects.  Foil facing has become the most popular in continuous insulation and us generally used as a radiant barrier, in cool roof applications. STEEL AND METAL BUILDINGS: The New Building Blocks Around

Steel buildings are becoming popular in many regions where, people look for a secure and safe storage especially for living, office space or animals farms. There is a wide variety of designs like clear span frames, modular frames or single-slope frames, to choose from. Moreover, you can get them at affordable prices too.

This makes steel buildings popular in many parts of Canada. It is not very hard to see these buildings in Fort McMurray, an urban service area in Alberta, Canada. It is called as the hub of Alberta's oil production.
As well as, in Regina, the capital and largest city of Saskatchewan, Canada. Apart from this in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta.

These areas are most of the time prone to harsh weather conditions. People find steel housing and building as a good option as these buildings have strength, durability, and their ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions is more as compared to other materials like wood. And many companies provide pre-fabricated Steel buildings that are easy to assemble, very attractive, energy efficient and very economical in these areas.

Metal buildings have also proven to be a good choice in many parts of Canada. The reason being, they are affordable and less expensive as compared to steel even. Moreover, they can be customized according to the owner’s needs. Metal buildings are constructed easily and quickly making them a much better product for construction of buildings as compared to wood. However, it is important to find a skilled and experienced team, which includes warranty also.

Everybody is opting for environment friendly lifestyle nowadays. So why not go for environment safe construction also. With an increase of modernization in steel and metal industry, people have started considering construction of steel and metal buildings as a better option.

The reason you can call it as less harmful for nature is, that the waste generated by construction of such buildings is one-tenth of that generated by other materials like wood. You can find these buildings in many areas of Canada, or one should call it modern Canada which is looking forward to this smarter construction as an ideal option.

From metal buildings Prince Edward Island, a Canadian province the smallest nation in land area to the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario, Toronto metal and steel buildings have become famous for commercial as well as residential uses. When it comes to metal buildings Toronto is the place to find some great constructions. These buildings are strong, offer durability and longevity just like the famous metal buildings Pei. There are various designs available for construction of these buildings; versatility is the key feature of these buildings. It makes them more suitable option for construction.

Metal and steel buildings Toronto can withstand any climatic conditions. They give better protection than other materials like wood, even during conditions like storms and earthquakes such buildings are stronger. And the best part is that you don’t have to spend too much, steel and metal buildings can be constructed at affordable rates. Many companies provide you with pre-fabricated buildings at great deals, you just have to look for the best people who can help you out and provide good designs also.

Metal and steel buildings are becoming very popular across the globe. The main reason behind the popularity is their versatility.
One can opt for steel and metal buildings for commercial, industrial and residential use as well. No matter you require a simple or a richly designed building; they can be molded according to all needs. These buildings look attractive and are equally safe like buildings made with other materials are. These qualities make them the best option in many Canadian places like Saskatchewan and Manitoba, a Canadian prairie province.

You may find many residential and commercial buildings made with steel and metal. These buildings can withstand the hard weather conditions. And prove to be much safer than the wooden buildings. They are fee from pests and bugs; apart from this these buildings are inflammable. Another reason, for choosing steel over wood or other materials, is that homes will be resistant to severe situations such as hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. So they can create a healthy environment.

It is however, important to choose right people to work for you. Only a skilled and experienced team can provide you best designs and quality at affordable prices. There is a wide market of companies that provide these pre-fabricated buildings in a very short span of time after your order placing. And they offer some best designs according to the needs; you can also get your building made at affordable prices.

Beneficial Steel buildings and Metal Buildings

A wide range of steel buildings Northwest Territories and metal buildings Northwest Territories has become one of the more popular options these days for homes, office, residential, or commercial purposes. The designs of straight-walled or a building with an arch are becoming all the rage. Also, there are other types of building designs including clearspan frames, modular frames or single-slope frames. When it comes to steel buildings Nunavut and metal buildings Nunavut, roof, framing, bracing and the walls all occupy a big part in establishment or foundation of such buildings. These buildings are one of the best ideas for people or business owners looking for a secure and a safe storage. These buildings are idea for living, office space or animals farms. Compared to wood and other concrete construction buildings, steel and metal buildings have benefits over them. These are durable. These buildings are built strong and last longer. Other benefit is that this type of building does have possibilities for improvements and changes. If people require making any changes or improvements in order to meet their requirements, they can simply go ahead with their plan in case of steel and metal buildings. Steel buildings Nova Scotia and Metal Buildings Nova Scotia are constructed very professionally, easily and quickly than any other form of building. These are pre-fabricated and pre-engineered buildings that are installed strategically. And, also include important parameters that fulfill criteria of custom building development services.

Range of steel and metal buildings

People/Business proprietors look for an innovative, cost-effective building to install for commercial and residential purposes. Range and designs of steel buildings New Brunswick and metal buildings New Brunswick are becoming popular and have been used for both commercial and residential purposes. The other forms of buildings such as wood buildings and traditional concrete construction buildings have fewer benefits than steel and metal buildings. Some of the necessary parameters and features in steel and metal buildings made these types of buildings ideal to install.

Steel buildings Labrador and metal buildings Labrador are strategically designed. Durability is one of the features of these buildings which are very important for people. Other than this, these buildings are economical as well. If we talk about traditional concrete buildings, heavy budget is required including construction-material cost, labor cost and other expenses. Steel and metal buildings do not require heavy budget. These buildings are installed easily and quickly. Green characters of buildings help people to meet their requirements. Solar panel systems are installed to use the renewable energy. Upgraded insulations systems are installed to cut down the heating costs. Apart from this, recyclability is one of the important parameters of these buildings. People looking forward to change something or improve, in steel and metal buildings, it can be done easily. Due to the strategically-designing, these pre-engineered and pre-fabricated buildings are ideal for all commercial purposes.

Home Improvement Tips for an Environmentally Friendly Building

Looking for ways to make your building more eco-friendly? While renovating every now and then is a good idea for a fresh look, you will also be adding value to your home/building. See below for tips on renovating your home to make it more environmentally friendly.
The first thing we look at is roofing. The best way to make this environmentally friendly is to add solar panels. Basically solar panels are put on your roof in the sun and will collect power without adding any fuel or replacing work out parts.  These panels are very popular, modern, green, and used almost everywhere. You might also want to change your roof colour, research indicates that roof colour and the type of material used can help to lower attic temperatures. If you decide to re-roof, consider lighter tiles such as white over the standard shingle roofs and this will reduce heat gain to your attic.

Another great idea is to replace all light bulbs in your building with compact fluorescent ones. Energy-smart bulbs use 70-75% less energy than the incandescent kind and last up to ten times longer! This is just a simple tip but can save you $59 dollars on energy costs over the life of the bulb, which can be anywhere from five to seven years. Also, installing motion detectors outside your home rather than leaving outdoor lighting on all night which will only waste energy, money and disturb wildlife.

One of the most important tips here is do not waste water.  Always check for leaky faucets and get them fixed if you notice a leak as soon as possible. When doing laundry, try to use cold water as much as you can. Also set a good example for your children by teaching them to turn off water while they brush their teeth. Installing low flow showerheads will cut down on water usage and save energy costs.
When heating and cooling your home, invest in a high-efficiency HVAC system that is Energy Star certified and install it in your home. This will reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted and will shave your utility bill.  Look for a product with a higher SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio). This means that the product meets strict government criteria necessary to be deemed "energy efficient." The standard is 13 SEER, but many heating and air conditioning products have a rating as high as 18 SEER.  Also, cleaning out your air conditioner filters and replacing them regularly will help to reduce costs. If you are not in your home, adjust the thermostat to accommodate the changing temperatures outside.
Finally, another good tip is to install more fans in your home. Ceiling fans can help reduce your family’s dependence on air condition during the hot summer months. In winter, they push heat down from the ceiling.

Waste Problems? No Problem!

Looking for a solution to your waste problems?  One company in Alaska by the name of Alaska Waste which is a refuse hauling company based in Anchorage are utilizing dumpsters. They provide a service called Greenwaste solutions which were created as an offshoot from Alaska Waste.  At first, they experienced a number of challenges with the high volume of moist produce waste which was being disposed and compounded by cold climate. Because grocery stores are their primary customer, problems arose when pre-consumer vegetable and fruit waste were placed in the dumpster and the juices from these fruits were leaking out of the dumpsters.  There was a large amount of liquid running out especially considering that the moisture content of these vegetables is 75 to 95 percent.  Due to the cold weather in Anchorage’s winter months, most of the contents will ice up allowing hazardous conditions for the people who had to access the dumpsters. As the trucks made their way into the streets, the juices were causing icy slicks. This became a serious problem for the town.  Finally, the company had discovered a method called rotating drum BioReactor technology by XACT Systems. This method has a tiny footprint and tremendous capacity. The product was installed in anchorage in 2009.  The vessel is 10-feet in diameter by 30-feet long.  Provided to the grocery store customers were 64-gallon tipper carts for fruits and vegetables for a small rental fee. The grocery store customers were very happy with this solution as it provided staff with a safe and clean environment.

Jeff Jessen from Alaska’s Waste renewable resources program is the administrator. He says he had to learn to make compost with the available feed stocks.  He states that “There is a little bit of an art to it, but once you get it dialed in, it runs on cruise control!”  Jeff says when you are trying to get the right carbon to nitrogen ratio, in order for composting to be successful; the more carbon will be needed to blend with the food waste. An ideal carbon source is wood chips, when this is blended with food waste; they provide better porosity for mixture which made better aeration.
The XACT system, which is housed in a building already existed on site and consists of four conveyors and a mixer. When the processing begins, the waste produce is loaded into a four-auger mixer truck which allows it to sit overnight and excess liquid will drain off. When morning comes, the mixer will begin and the manure and wood chips are now added. This will run for about 20 minutes. The contents will now be discharged onto a conveyor and this will all be transferred to the in feel of the BioReactor.

What Makes Steel and Metal Buildings in Alberta so Popular

If you have been searching for a solution to your garage, agricultural or industrial building needs then without a doubt you would have come across metal or steel buildings. These buildings are becoming very popular all around the globe. If you are still wondering what makes these metal buildings Alberta so popular over other types of construction materials then we are sure that by the end of this blog you will have answers to all your questions.

One major aspect that makes steel buildings British Columbia so popular is their versatility. They can be used anywhere in the industrial and commercial sectors, furthermore they are also used in the community for residential purposes. These buildings can be as simple as a carport or as complicated as a multi-story richly designed commercial building. They are very popular for housing combustible materials like hay bails or farming. These metal buildings BC look very attractive and have all the facades that a building manufactured from any other material possess. These buildings are also used in NASA for functional reasons. The steel buildings of today are more architecturally tasteful than several wood constructed buildings. Moreover, they are absolutely free from bugs and termites, are completely inflammable and provide temperate and safe environment to everything that needs to be accommodated inside the building.

Steel Building Designs

Steel buildings come in a variety of designs, the more common ones are straight-walled or with an arch.  Other types of designs include clearspan frames, modular frames or single-slope frames.  These types are generally used for the construction of most steel buildings.  Roof, framing, bracing and the walls all play a big part in the foundation of a steel building.  Most of the time, the floor can be made of medal or concrete.  The fittings that steel buildings include are doors, windows, skylights, roof vents, wiring, interior walls and insulation.  The building designs are all brought together by being drilled, punched and welded before they hit the building site.

Steel buildings are idea for those looking for a secure and safe storage especially for living, office space or animals farms.  All low-rise modern buildings generally are made up of steel making them popular and a good choice.  Metal buildings are constructed easily and quickly making them a much better product compared to wood.  They also include a warranty.  Steel building can be quite expensive depending on what the building owner’s needs are, however they can be quite affordable too.  The wonderful thing about meal buildings are that they can be fabricated for any design the building owner wishes and can be customized according to the owners needs.

Once a building owner has chosen a design for their building, it’s mandatory to have an engineer check the complexity of the design.  More often than not, some complex designs can take much longer to fabricate making the building process go much longer.  Also, working with a technical expert will help the building owner get exact measurements of their desired building design. A building owner must know that the size and price of the building should be suitable for their budget.  Exterior finishes are a great way to make your building look much more attractive.

Pros of Steel Homes

You’ve probably heard that steel framing is one of the more popular options these days for homes.  Compared to the traditional wood homes, steel buildings are making a come back in the construction market today.  Now, some areas such as Hawaii, they are using steel framing for all their homes especially here where many natural disasters occur. Steel tends to be strong enough to withstand these weather conditions.

When you’re looking to build long term, steel plays a great role in longevity.  It can promise to give your building years of life from up to 50 years and over providing yearly maintenance.  Aside from this, steel is a very durable product and won’t rust like some of the other product on the market.  Materials such as wood will rot and warp over time but steel won’t and the walls of your mom will stay perfect straight right up until the very end. How’s that for a steel building?  As mentioned above, the number one reason for choosing steel over wood is that homes will be resistant to severe weather such as hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.  Most steel homes are built to those standards so that they will remain standing and safe even after weather disasters.  Another great quality of steel is that it is bug resistant, which means that most termites will not be able to find a home in steel and bugs won’t be able to eat through steel as they do with wood.  Any structural damage that occurs with wood cannot occur with steel.

After reading about some of the advantages, you may wonder how much a steel home may cost.  Well, although steel frame homes can be quite expensive and are competitive, the cost can equal to almost the same as traditional materials, construction costs etc.  Consider that the time used to use screws rather than use nails can often be the same.  However screws cost more.  Another drawback can be the insulation because most steel homes require a lot more insulation to insulate a home.  This is another area where costs may go up, however it will be worth it in the long run given the outstanding advantages that steel has to offer.

Another piece of advice when construction a steel home is to make sure you find the right people for the job. Skilled and experienced workers with experience in the steel industry are essential.  For proper erecting and insulation of your steel home, it must be done correctly in order to reap the advantages of steel buildings.  When installed effectively, you can expect to see your home last for over 50 years!

Energy Efficiency in Construction

When designing or planning a pre-engineered steel building for your project whether it is for your home, office, residential, or commercial we often think about how it will effect our environment. When building, most owners look for greener products and green building to improve the quality of our environment.  The benefits are usually huge allowing us to save on our energy bills cutting costs by half.

There are so many factors that effect our environment today such as the design, construction, and maintenance of our steel buildings. More than 75 million plus residential buildings and almost 5 million commercial buildings impact our environment the U.S. today.  One third of all energy is being consumed in the United States.  The more and more buildings are being built the more energy is being consumed resulting in major energy consumption and high energy bills.  Now, we are starting to take control of this and would like to build smart.  This way we use a minimum amount of non-renewable energy as well as produce minimum pollution allowing for a much better economy.

Pollution and air quality problems come from the many industrial buildings that we have constructed. High amounts of sulphur dioxide emissions and nitrous oxide emissions are produced everyday.  This is very damaging to our air quality.  Often this is overlooked and the focus is on components, its surroundings, and its occupants. Generally, a building consumes more resources than it should which results in impacting the environment with large amounts of toxic waste.

Most industries have acknowledged this and this is why we are trying very hard to get the word out and promote greener buildings. As an example, if 10 percent of homes in the U.S. used a solar panel roof system or cool roof system this would help reduce tons of carbon emissions per year. There are many green products out there which will help to provide much cleaner buildings. Greener buildings offer environmentally sound and resource efficient green building which uses an integrated approach to design.  Green buildings also promote resource conservation, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation features, are considered environmental impacts and waste.

Steel Buildings and Recycling

Green is becoming popular these days and the reason for this is that they provide eco-friendly, green steel building design and a variety of selection of wall panels, metal roofing, standing seam roof system and much more.  More and more building owners are now looking into green products to add to their steel building to create a greener, eco-friendly building.  The great thing about green building is that steel building products and materials contain steel from Nucor steel mills which includes sheet metal, plate, bar and beam making this recyclable.  The average amount of steel being recycled is over 80%.

Those of you who are in the market for a steel building, you can find a variety of green structural systems which also includes clearspan rigid frame, modular rigid frame, tapered beam and lean-to.  All products can be found in standard or long span options.  Better yet if you’re looking for crane support or mezzanines, they too can also be found and included in any green building package.  The good thing about these packages is that they can be designed in any size to achieve the perfect design for your building requirements.  Most companies will design your building in a way that will meet the owner’s building needs.  Green steel building also includes code of standard practice for steel joists and steel decking as well as for roof applications.

Waste that is created by buildings is one-tenth compared to wood.  All other steel waste is 100 percent recyclable.  There are no limits to how often steel can be recycled.  The most industries recycle steel more than any other product such as glass, paper and plastic.  Some facts about steel – every ton of steel that is produced uses one-third less energy than what industries manufactured over two decades ago.  Water being used by manufacturing companies undergoes cleaning and recycling.  It was reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute that they are trying to continually work towards reducing carbon emissions during the steel making process. This will also mean that they will replace carbon with hydrogen as fuel in blast furnaces.  Steel Buildings tend to be lighter in weight than concrete or wood buildings. They also require less space when compared to other materials such as masonry or wood. Most industries tend to construct steel by prefabrication panels which contain insulated layers of foam.  Steel buildings are great for a greener environment and a major plus for recycling!

Cost Effective Daylighting Systems

Are you looking for an innovative, cost-effective daylighting system to install in your building?  Consider a retrofit daylighting system which is compatible with a retrofit roofing system.  The daylighting systems of today feature a self-curbing and high performance lens created by Sunoptics.  The skylights that are offered by this company are energy saving products and provide natural lighting and with this, will reduce daytime demand for electrical lighting.

Skylights are cost effective and energy efficient and will save you a ton on your energy bill.  PrisMax skylight was created by California based companies Sunoptics, Acuity Brands Co., and Varco Pruden.  This product features new daylight technologies that are different from other skylighting systems. This product in particular is built for buildings that have retrofit roofing installed more specifically standing seam roofs.  Once this system is installed you can expect to see lighting costs reduced on your energy bill, this also includes heating and cooling costs as well, especially if you own a huge building with tons of lighting, this product may be the solution to saving energy.

If you’re wondering how much money you will save, you can expect to cut down your utility expenses from 40 to 70 percent!  By contacting the company, you can actually receive an actual number as they will calculate exactly what you will save.  The product that can calculate these numbers is called an ESP (Energy Savings Product) that will now be available for builders.  The ESP will calculate your annual energy savings as well as the projected payback from the skylighting system.

The skylighting system can be installed quickly and easily by mounted on sturdy aluminum rails and will use the seam portion of the roofs system for structural support. Saving you time and money, because of this products self-curbing design it minimizes installation, unlike the traditional skylights that are not as simple to install.

This product is an excellent idea and it will cut costs, provide beautiful daylight lighting so you won’t have to use any of your own standard lighting as well as save on cooling and heating costs. For more info, click here.

How to Decrease Carbon Footprint

Carbon dioxide is in the air and in the news, did you know that a building’s carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 it produces during its operations and activities? Well, CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to negative global climate change. It is the highest in more than 750,000 years in our atmosphere today. These have been the warmest 22 years recorded since 1980.  Scientific consensus has shown that a growing green movement and common sense dictate that carbon must be reduced.
Buildings in the U.S. account for 39 percent of per year more than any other sector.  Buildings in the United States alone are responsible for more CO2 emissions than any other country except for China.  In order to provide heating, cooling and lighting or to power appliances and electrical equipment, most of these emissions come from fossil fuel combustion. Robert Backus, CEO, Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, N.Y. says “In the 21st century, it has become evident that we need to change the way we relate to our planet if we expect our children to inherit a clean, livable planet.”  Omega Center for Sustainable Living has become the first green building in America to achieve both LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certification, and has the highest performance standards possible today.
When it comes to buildings, there are two aspects to a carbon footprint. The first aspect is 18 percent of a carbon’s footprint is created within the first year of the buildings construction. You must include the building design, construction and operation.  Also, be sure to select low-emission factors such as transportation of materials, reducing construction waste, salvaging materials during the demolition and lowering energy and operational costs. The second aspect is reducing a building’s carbon footprint also produces major benefits such as the most obvious one cutting costs.  The others include: employment engagement is improved, rents can be higher, and including image and marketability.  Another major benefit is that sustainable buildings with good LEED or BREEAM scores are often more acceptable to planners and there maybe incentives or fewer disincentives to build.
In case you’re wondering what BREEAM stands for, it is an environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 200,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratings and over a million registered for assessment since it was first launched back in 1990.
In order to measure your buildings footprint, a good tool to have is a carbon footprint calculator and whole-building energy-model tool that is publicly available to software tools.

Solar Roofing And Panels

Many of you have probably already heard about solar roofing and its benefits and are possibly considering this. If so there are just a few things you may need to do in order to get your roof top solar ready.  There are certain steps that are required before installation and this will give you an idea of what is needed to complete installation in order to make your roof ready for a solar panels system.

Before installing your solarpanel system, you must begin the process with a site and roof evaluation. This includes:  wind loads, roof warranties, useful life remaining in the roof system, solar orientation and usable roof area and location of the building’s electrical service.  Permits and a plan must also be considered before installation. This will finalize the installation and should include panels, positioning and overall PV design. An evaluation is important as it will determine the use of a building’s energy consumption and can give you an idea of how much energy is being saved.  In the evaluation, included should be a walked roof and a report should be prepared indicating if there are any deficiencies with the roof. This may include any cracks in the roof, open seams, ponding water or punctures.  Especially if the roof you are working on happens to be 10 years or older, any open seams should be sealed and if there is any current damage it must be repaired.  Inspecting your roof is a good idea to ensure that there are not any other abnormalities in the roof.  If you find a sag or deep depression in the roof, it could indicate a weakness in the roof and will require correction.

Roof size should also be considered when doing PV evaluation and preparation.  Roofs require south-facing space in order to accommodate a PV system.  In some areas, such as the northern hemisphere, the southern exposure to the sun is ideal especially when it’s full force.  However, in any case panels can be oriented to the southeast or southwest without decreasing its performance.  Remember that panels should be free from obstructions and shading as it can block the sun.  You also need to make sure there are not overhanging trees or any other surrounding buildings close by.  So there you have it, these are just a few tips to consider before installing your solar roofing system.

Minimizing Health Concerns with Green Building

Although industries having been taking initiative in making their building more eco-friendly both good for us and the economy, unfortunately the issue has been more focused on our planet and less on our health.  There have been concerns that our health has not been put first when considering leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED).  As reported from a Connecticut based nonprofit, Environmental and Human Health Inc., who’s dedicated to protecting the health of the people from the harmful chemicals from the environment.

John Wargo from Yale University says “They have to be given great credit for work on energy conservation. And there clearly are environmental quality and health benefits that will accrue from conservation efforts,” He later goes on to say "But (LEED) has got some serious problems with respect to environmental quality and human health."

For those of you who are not familiar with LEED, it is designed to provide third-party verification that will initially provide the necessary steps to a building or community using several metrics that are aimed to promoting energy benefits.  Providing that you have gone in the direction of LEED, you will begin to save on energy savings, water efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality, stewardship of resources; sensitivity to their impacts as well as you will see reduction in C02 emissions.  LEED is becoming well known because of its energy benefits and more industries today are making their buildings LEED certified.   However, in the health report there has been gaps regarding human health and the environment.  As an example several compounds that had been found in homes and building products can harm human health and the environment especially bisphenol-A, polyvinyl chloride, and plastic additives to name a few.

Another concern was the drinking of water, while reduced water use and conservation of energy including distribution and sanitizing of the water, there has been no credit for drinking the water.  There have been no goals for testing or filtration.  However, designers have said that LEED is a great tool and has pushed the construction industry in an important direction. It also raises the bar for builders as well as designers.

As LEED becomes more accepted, we hope they will work on the gold standard in making human health a top priority. This way, not only will LEED be eco-friendly but will also be better on our health!

The Green Code and Steel Buildings

We all know now that green buildings are a great investment, not only are they green, durable, cost effective and easy to build; they also qualify for the green code. This is a major plus.  If you’re wondering what they mean by green, well it’s basically a structure that takes into consideration our environment, especially resource conservations.  Steel building happens to meet all of the criteria which are required for The Green Code.

This is a good idea for anyone looking to invest in steel buildings.  The information you will read in this article will be of great information for your next steel building project.  The good thing about steel buildings is that they do not release any harmful materials during construction as well as steel buildings in general are not harmful and great for our environment and surrounding area.

The reason why steel buildings are green code approved is because they are eco friendly buildings which means they are 100 percent recyclable and non renewable energy as well expensive and exhaustible materials that happen to be forest woods can also be preserved. If after many years you feel your steel building’s life has passed, consider breaking down the building materials and reusing them for other purposes.

Steel Buildings do not any kind of diesel or powered heavy equipment gas during the construction process. This is why they are categorized as energy efficient. They are pre-engineered which means they do not need any welding or cutting afterwards.  They do not produce any kind of fuming and are non-polluting.  The reason why steel buildings meet the requirements of green code is because they are constructed from high-quality building materials. These materials are steel alloy, which happens to be the most reliable materials and it requires little maintenance.  The good thing about green buildings is that they require very little maintenance which means energy and costs are decreased which will result in low expenses in the future.

As you can see, steel happens to meet the building code requirements making steel buildings a very popular choice for renewable energy and durability.

Lately, you’ve probably been hearing the term “Living Building” quite a bit and that is because it is becoming very popular in the steel building industry. If you’re wondering what living buildings are or what the term means, The Cascadia Region Green Building Council (CRGBC) and the Northwest Chapter of the USGBC describes it is a structure that generates all of its own energy with renewable nontoxic resources, captures and treats all of its water, and operates efficiently and for maximum beauty.  The two groups have been trying to get the word of living buildings out in the public particularly in construction industries and are also trying very hard to launch a new program called the International Living Building Institute in order to promote awareness of the concept all over the world.

Jason McLennan, CEO of CRGBC states “We view our role as the organization that is meant to ask the really tough questions, to push the boundaries as far as possible,” says Jason McLennan, CEO of CRGBC. To this end, in 2006 the group launched its Living Building Challenge (LBC), a “call to the design and construction community to pursue true sustainability in the built environment.”  In North America, over 60 different projects are trying to meet LBC standards which are even higher than LEED certification standards.

So far there is one building in Rhinebeck, NY named the Omega Center which has been completed and is being considered for the LBC program.  The building is a 6,200 square-foot and a one level building which will be the head office for the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and will feature a geothermal heating and cooling system.  The building will also include solar panels and rain gardens that are meant to direct water run-off to keep plants watered at all times.  The center will also include a greenhouse which will help filter wastewater for reuse such as daylighting design that will bring in natural light from the outdoors. Daylighting will minimize the use of electric light usage.  The building was created to be a net zero building which meets LBC criteria.  Net Zero buildings also classify as buildings that use no more energy than they generate themselves.  Once the Omega center has been up and running for one year, it will be audited by the CRGBC in order to find out if the building meets its performance and lives up to the living building criteria.  Other buildings that are being considered for LBC will also be audited.

The downside of net zero or living buildings is that they are very expensive.  Finding materials that meet the LBC standards may also be difficult to find, but as LBC and net zero gain awareness and popularity in the future to come these products will become easier to find.  Once more of these buildings become well known and more of them are up and running, we can expect see dropped costs as well as a more environmentally friendly environment!
